Where Movement Becomes Music
Upband is an interactive fitness experience that transforms physical movement into music through smartwatch motion tracking. By combining exercise, music creation, and social participation, it reimagines fitness as a more engaging, expressive, and collaborative experience.

Fitness Felt Repetitive and Hard to Sustain
Most fitness apps are built around tracking metrics such as steps, calories, or duration, but that kind of feedback alone is often not enough to keep people emotionally engaged. Many workouts still feel repetitive, solitary, and hard to sustain over time. Upband was designed to address this gap by making exercise feel more interactive, expressive, and socially motivating.
Exercise Lacked Creativity and Social Motivation
Many workout experiences are still solitary and task-driven, offering little room for self-expression or social connection. Without a more interactive and rewarding experience, it becomes harder for users to stay motivated and enjoy the process of being active.

My Design Approach
I designed Upband as a lightweight and motivating wearable experience that makes interaction feel immediate and intuitive on a smartwatch. The flow introduces users gradually, helping them understand how motion creates sound before guiding them into a more social and collaborative experience.
The interaction model was built around simplicity: clear onboarding, gesture-based participation, instant audio feedback, and a visual language that feels playful without becoming distracting. The goal was to make music creation feel accessible to people with no musical background, while still making workouts feel dynamic and rewarding.

Key Design Decisions
1. Turning movement into immediate feedback
The core experience was designed so that motion is not just tracked, but transformed into musical output in real time. This creates a stronger emotional loop between action and reward, making exercise feel more alive and less mechanical.

Designing for simplicity on a wearable device
Because the product lives on a smartwatch, the experience needed to stay clear, lightweight, and easy to navigate. I focused on short onboarding steps, simple prompts, and clean screens that support quick comprehension and low interaction effort. The visual system also uses a restrained palette and compact UI components suited to wearable environments.

3. Making fitness more social
Beyond individual use, Upband introduces the idea of forming a band with others, allowing multiple users to contribute to a shared musical experience. This transforms fitness from an isolated activity into a more collaborative and enjoyable one.

Core Experience
Upband’s core experience was designed as a simple and motivating journey, helping users understand movement, sound, and social interaction through lightweight wearable touchpoints.
Onboarding the interaction
The onboarding flow helps users quickly understand the relationship between movement, gesture, and sound. Instead of overwhelming them with too much setup, it teaches the system through action, making the learning process feel playful and intuitive. The early screens shown in the project introduce selecting an instrument, learning gestures, and hearing the result immediately.

Motion-based music creation
At the center of the experience is the conversion of body movement into musical notes. This reframes exercise as creative expression, helping users stay engaged not only because they are active, but because they are making something in the process.
Social band formation
Upband extends the experience by allowing users to connect with others and form a band. This creates a stronger sense of participation and introduces social motivation into the workout process, which is especially valuable when fitness otherwise feels isolated.

Visual & Interaction System
The interface uses a soft, expressive visual language built around violet accents, light neutrals, and simple card-based content structures. Buttons, cards, and imagery were designed to remain legible and purposeful within the smaller constraints of a smartwatch interface. The system balances clarity with a playful personality, supporting both usability and emotional appeal.

Recognition
Upband has been recognized through multiple international design awards, including:
New York Product Design Awards 2024 — Silver
DNA Paris Design Awards 2024 — Winner
MUSE Creative Awards 2024 — Silver Winner
IDA Design Awards 2024 — Honorable Mention

Final Reflection
Upband explores how wearable interaction can make fitness feel less repetitive and more emotionally engaging. By combining movement, music, and social participation, the project shifts exercise from passive tracking to active expression. The result is a more playful and motivating experience that expands what fitness can feel like.
